Oberoi Udaivilas - Udaipur Guide
Udaipur is the capital of the historic kingdom of Mewar, one of the oldest surviving dynasties in the world and was established around 1567 A.D. By legend, the royal Rajput rulers are descended from the Sun God.
Consequently the golden sun, representing the Sun God, is still the royal insignia of the Maharana of Mewar and has been adopted as a recurring motif in the design of The Oberoi Udaivilās.
The chequered history of Mewar is reflected in the city of Udaipur, an oasis in the desert state of Rajasthan as the rich and beguiling tapestry of lakeside palaces, forts, temples, havelis and gardens, echos the varied influences of the centuries.
City Place
The City Palace stands on a hill on the banks of Lake Pichola, protected by crenulated walls. Built in 1567, it encopasses 4 major palaces and several minor palaces that join together to form a single faēade. Its main entrance is through a triple arched gate, the Tripolia, built in 1725. The Tripola then leads to a series of courtyards, corridors and gardens.
The Rai Angan (Royal Courtyard) contains a shrine, which forms the oldest part of Udaipur, here Udai Singh encountered an ascetic who suggested founding Udaipur here.
The centrally located 17th century Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard) is named for the inlaid glass mosaics of peacocks on its walls.
Whilst other exotic rooms include the Krishna Vilas dedicated to a 16 year old princess who tragically committed suicide, the Zenana Mahal (Palace of the Queens) and the Chini Chitrasala, with its exquisite mosaics and blue and white ceramics.
West of main gate lies Khush Mahal (Palace of Happiness) whilst Shambhu Niwas, built in the 19th century is to the South. The third palace is Shiv Niwas, now a hotel. Alongside is Fateh Prakash, also a hotel, known for its Durbar Hall and Crystal Gallery.
25-minutes drive from the hotel, a visit to the City Palace is highly recommended. The complete tour takes approximately 3 hours. English, French and German speaking guides can be arranged by our Front desk.
Crystal Gallery
The majestic Durbar Hall is overlooked by the Crystal Gallery in Fateh Prakash Hotel . It includes a rare collection of Osler's crystal ordered from England by Maharana Sajjan Singh in 1877, alongside crystal chandeliers and crystal furniture like chairs, dressing tables and a bed. A visit is recommended.

A visit to the Jagdish temple takes 20 minutes.

Known as the Monsoon Palace, Sajjan Garh is positioned on top of a hill overlooking Lake Pichola dominating the city's skyline. Built in the late 19th century by Maharana Sajjan Singh as an observatory, it has an awe-inspiring view of the city and the surrounding lakes, rivers and Aravalli ranges. It is surrounded by wooded hillsides and was originally a royal hunting ground.
Sajjan Garh is a wonderful place from which to view the sunset, and a visit here is highly recommended. However, it is worth remembering that some sections of the road are very steep and narrow. The palace building is currently used by the Government of India and is a restricted security area, whilst the hillside leading up to Sajjan Garh is a wildlife sanctuary.
