HikingTrail 1 - Oaks & Orchards HikeDistance: 6 km - Duration: 2.5 hrs - Grade: Easy An easy-paced, three-hour hike skirting Mashobra Hill and looping around the Presidential Retreat – a beautiful colonial bungalow that is the President of India's summer retreat. The forest trail shows you a glorious view from a hilltop adjacent to the Wildflower Hall, and then winds back through thick oak forests and apple orchards dotted with colonial cottages. Trail 2 - The Wild Strawberry Trail Distance: 4 km - Duration: 1 hr - Grade: Easy This pleasant walk lasts an hour and covers four kilometres, as it skirts the Shimla Water Catchment Sanctuary. The trail loops astride the Mahasu Ridge through the abundant green forest reserve and with its gentle gradient it is ideal for the elderly. This trail also provides a wonderful introduction to the flora of the Himalayas and offers spectacular views. Trail 3 - The Sanctuary Trail Option A: Distance 7 km - Duration 2.5 hrs. Moderate. Option B: Distance 12 km - Duration 5 hrs Challenging. Wildflower Hall is enveloped on three sides by the Shimla Water Catchment Sanctuary. There are two ways to explore the sanctuary, famous for its luxuriant flora and fauna. One option is a two to three hour hike into the sanctuary following a trail cut through the lush undergrowth. An alternative option is a longer, five-hour hike across the dense and ancient forest within the sanctuary, enjoying an area that has been conserved for the past 125 years and houses an assortment of rare birds and animals. An entry permit from the Forest Department requires at least a day's notice. CyclingEnjoy the wonderful and majestic landscape exploring the bicycling trails as they pass through the woods of cedar, spruce and pine. In spring, the trails come alive as wild flowers sprinkled across the hillsides blaze in a riot of colour. Challenging trails or an easy-paced ride are all available. Come across hamlets where life remained unchanged for years. Ride through forests where majestic trees have stood for centuries. Trail 1 - The Sylvan TrailDistance: 18 km - Duration: 4 hrs - Grade: Easy Starting from Mashobra village, a 20-minute car journey from the Wildflower Hall, this trail from Mashobra to Bekhalty consists of a level road that encircles the hill on which Wildflower Hall rests. Scenic villages litter the road and the trail provides some stunning views of the Great Himalayan Range and the Shali peak that dominates the north-western skyline. At Bekhalty the track joins the highway at this small hamlet our vehicle retrieves the bikers to drive them back to the Wildflower Hall. Trail 2 – The Oaks & Orchards Trail Distance: 6 km - Duration: 2 hrs - Grade: Moderate This two hour trail circumnavigates Mashobra Hill and looping around the Presidential Retreat - a beautiful colonial bungalow that is the President of India's summer retreat. The trail drops gently from a hill adjacent to the Wildflower Hall, offering an impressive view of the surrounding mountains and ravines. It then wends its way back through oak forests and apple orchards.
