The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata
Discover Kolkata - Places of Tourist InterestKolkata is a city that tends to elicit rather extreme reactions from travellers. Labelled 'The City of Joy' by Dominic Lapiere and 'The City of the Dreadful Night' by Rudyard Kipling, its image has not always been positive.
However nowdays Kolkata offers a rewarding experience, particularly for those with the sensitivity to look beyond the facade.
Until the 17th century, Kolkata was merely a village. Yet since then it has expanded dramatically to become one of the primary cities in India ranked alongside Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Its rise is due the British Empire.
As the capital city of the British Raj it acted as the Gateway to India until 1912. Since then it has maintained its status as a major commercial city containing both large industrial plants and corporate headquarters.
A diverse city, made up of many elements, Kolkata is famed for its cinema, poetry, music, art and cinema yet also offers up some wonderful memorabilia of the British Raj.
Above all, Kolkata is an intensely human city. The warmth and charm of its people must be experienced to be believed and offer the traveller a unique experience, one which will never be forgotten.
