Oberoi Vanyavilas - Places of Interest

Places of Tourist Interest

Ranthambhore Fort is a massive enclave granted by the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam to Sawai Madho Singh I of Jaipur in 1754 AD. After this it was maintained as the private hunting preserve. Much later, Queen Elizabeth II and Duke of Edinburgh stayed at this unique Rajput Fort.

In 1964 the fort came under the protection of the Archeological Department. At 1578 ft above sea level and 750ft from ground, the total area of the fort is approximately 7 square miles. It is not possible to drive up to the fort, the only access is by stairs. There are three big artificial lakes up in the Fort.

Jogi Mahal

(11 km from the Resort) Jogi Mahal is about 250 years old, and commands the view of Padam Talao or the lotus lake on one side and the ramparts of Ranthambhore Fort. Adjacent to it is one of India’s largest banyan trees, fondly known as `walking tree’ because over the years it has sent out so many branches thereby increasing its shade area. This rest house was closed to the public in 1992.

Gilai Sagar, Mansarovar

(16 km from the Resort) This lake attracts thousands of migratory birds during winter and is particularly interesting to bird-watchers. In this area you can even find a herd of black buck, the rarely seen antelope of this arid region.

Rajbagh Lake

(28 km from the Resort) Carpeted with lotus flowers and an abundance of lotus-eaters, Rajbagh Lake has the highest density of sambar deer and marsh crocodile. The back pools serve as nurseries for chital and sambar, whose young can be found here in large numbers.

Highest Point

(45 km from the Resort) From here you can see an `aerial’ view of the Park which justifies the time it takes getting there. From here you can see the dramatic hill ranges of the Aravallis and the Vindhyas.

Sultanpur Ki Kui

(12 km from the Resort) This lovely road full of tendu trees is one of the most scenic drives in the Park. In the fruiting season of the tendu in March, the sloth bears of Ranthambhore can be seen feasting along this road.

Fort of Khandar

(35 km from the Resort) On the far side of the Reserve, this impressive fort commands a stunning view of the area and is well worth a visit.
