History
Kempegowda, a chieftain of the Vijayanagar Empire founded Bangalore in the 16th century. Within two centuries it had become a strategic fortress during the reigns of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan (although little remains of the old fort).

Bangalore became a British military base in the late 19th century. In the 1930s many of its beautiful tree-lined roads and parks were laid out and in the 1980s the city became a focal point of Indian business, with many of India's leading corporations establishing their bases here.
