Known as the most extravagant monument ever built for love, this breath-taking mausoleum has effectively become the tourist emblem of India. Emperor Shah Jahan constructed it in memory of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal, whose death in childbirth in 1631 left the Emperor so heartbroken that his hair reputedly turned grey overnight. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.
